Yeah, sometimes people just need some scientific quantitative answers to these catastrophic problems.

Do a compression test, but you'll need to rebuild your head. Look at the positive side, now you can build a sick head!

It isn't actually terribly expensive, just time consuming. And at 225k you owe your car this much!

for future reference, the timing belt wont have any signs of wear on the visible part, but the teeth will start to wear then slip? So I shouldn't think everything is alright with it just by looking at the top of it?

Default You get a 10 second warning!

It's not the belt that fails it's the tensioner on the 1.8T.

Checking the belt is not particularly helpful.

On the V6 it's the waterpump that fails first.

so im guessing theres no way to tell when the tensioner is close to failing. Just when i bought my car 82K the guy said he thinks the timing belt was done around 50-60k but didnt have any paperwork. Scared although if it did break it would give me an excuse to do a BT and be broke.
