Tail lights

I searched the forums,, but did not get a clear answer,,,Can you directly swap a 1.8T 1998 tailights with the amber blinker with a 1999 1.8T,,,

1998 never had amber. You can directly swap the current European units, or you can put in the north american 1996 units by making some wiring modifications.

Be more specific...

If I am correct, in North America a new, all red taillight came in by 1998.5 models. Yet another change in 1999.5 models, where the turn signal and the back up light were swapped. As far as I know it still blinks red though.

I do not know if you may swap these w/o futher mod. The easiest way to find out is to post the color codes of the wires going into the tail light assembly 1-6 (there are total 6 of them numberred on the harness connector). Then someone with a 99.5 would do the same and if they are identical, the swap is direct. If not, then you have to swap your wires in the harness, which is some work, but doable (I just did it last weekend to move my brake lights to the upper positions of the taillight assembly). Email me if you need more info.

If you are to change from a 98.5 NA model to a 98.5 Euro, it IS a direct swap.

I have a 98.5 and was wondering if I could make the rear fog lights come on with the center brake light and only have the bottom lights come on with the parking/head lights. I would think a connector pin swap would do the trick but I'm reluctant to try it. How did you do yours?
