Default Temp problem...

Recently I have noticed that my car takes a long time to heat up. Before it warmed up relatively quickly and stayed between the C and H. But now whenever it starts to warm up, and I push the car to higher RPMs (3-5) the needle drops back down. And I would be out doing some errands for a couple hours and it would still not give a consistant reading.
If anyone knows whats up I would really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks

Default Does your heat work inside the car?

If not, it's probably your thermostat.

Default you need a new coolant temp sensor. happened to me.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/143/bad-temp-sensor.jpg"></center><p>your gas milage will suffer.

its an easy fix, and its cheap.

(in the pic see the oil temp vs the coolant temp? my needle would bounce around as you descibed as well)

Default Agreed.

My thermostat was sticking open and my car would take forever to heat up. And temperature would drop down slightly while cruising and only come back up if I drove the car hard.

I had the thermostat replaced and it has been fine since.

Default If the needle is moving erratically, I'd say temp sensor as well. However...

if the gauge is moving smoothly but just taking a long time to warm up and dropping down to the cold side on easy driving, thermostat is the more likely cuprit.

Regardless, the temp sensor is a cheap and easy to replace part so probably start with that and if it fails to solve the problem, move on to the thermostat.
