THUNK.

This morning on the way to work, I was following one of the over 70 crowd on a one lane road, when I decided to pass. Well the car was in auto, I flipped it to manual and noticed it was in 4th. Since I was going about 30 mph, I shifted down two gears.The engine raced for 1 second, then THUNK, and it went into gear. It sounded like someone hit me from behind! Worried, I tried it again, (kind of like the stupid kids in horror movies - "oh theres a creepy sound, I think I'll go investigate..."

) but couldn't get it to repeat the same way.Was this drive train lash or did I give the differential a good whack that I need to be worried about? No, I didn't have anything in the trunk...Thanks for any words of wisdom.

is the past tense of "think", right ?

Thunks like that never have a good effect on your driveline. Sounds like the transmission got told to go to neutral, then got told to get into gear. Ykes.I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to replicate the problem. You'll just break something. Talk to your friendly Service Advisor, and then talk to your Service Technician, since the Service Advisors usually don't have a clue.

I had a similar sound in my A4 non-tip...

I have a manual transmission. It was when I was slowing to a stop in the rain. Just as I came to a stop there was a loud "Thunk" sound and a jerk of the car. Car did not stall.It felt like the person behind me rear ended me! In fact it was so realistic and looking in thre rearview it looked like the person behind me heard it too. I jumped out of the car to confront the driver. It turns out they were a couple of feet behind me and there was not a scratch on the bumper. They did hear the noise too.Maybe a backfiring/detonation of some sort? I haven't replicated it nor have I tried.
