Default ticking noise from dash -- sounds like a typewriter

Help. I get a ticking noise every once in a while coming from under the dash, possibly behind the instrument cluster. It sounds like a person randomly hitting keys on a typewriter. The weird thing is, it is not a rattle or happening because of vibration. It comes and goes, for about a minute or two at a time. It doesn't matter if I'm driving on a bumpy or smooth road, fast or slow, in a straight line or turning. It can happen at any time and stop at any time, and when it is occurring I haven't found any way to speed it up or make it stop. I have no idea how to reproduce it. As I am driving along, from under the dash it will just sound like somebody going crazy on an old mechanical typewriter, about as loud as if the person on the typewriter was behind a door in the adjacent room. I'm guessing this means I have a relay or something going out (at least I hope that's it, because a relay sounds a lot easier to replace than an old typewriter wedged up in the dash). I've searched the archives but can't seem to come up with a solution. Everything in the car (fans, climate system, turn signals, etc.) seem to function normally for the time being. Any ideas as to what it going on?

Will it make the noise in park? Get out the stethescope. If you don't have one Harbor Freight does. Cheap. Start there. If you must be moving enlist a helper to listen. I seriously doubt that your typewriter is typing by itself so let's eliminate that.

I noticed this morning that my passenger front turn signal light now comes on when I hit the brakes. I'm guessing this has something to do with the noise I've been hearing. Time to replace a relay or two.
