Default The Tip...

...in our 2.8QTS is driving me crazy!!!! It is the single biggest flaw in the car, second being the little noises by the pillars. I think the biggest problem with it is in the electronic controls. It shifts slowly, upshifts way too soon, jerks ocassionally, has a terrible torque converter at coasting speeds or going downhill and takes too long to go into first when coming to a stop. It generally fights with the driver.
It is mostly smooth, and it does have the Tip feature which is nice, but the rest is not so good. I wish we could get back more control of our cars, i.e. less electronics. I know this won't happen because of all the regulations now(like the check engine thing), but I can wish.
It's like tha gas mileage, which is very good on the highway (~28MPG observed)and terrible in city (~15.5 observed). It's the electronics. (I know this is natural, but other engines give a much better balance.)
I guess that's why all the car writers like the Miata so much. You can control the car and have FUN in it. It FEELS pure.
Sorry for the carping. I love the car, but hate the Tip.

Mike -
Just a comment, not a flame. Personally, I bought my Tip because I didn't want a manual this time around for city traffic. But I did test drive it thoroughly. Did you test drive yours?? I noticed when I test drove it that it was underpowered and had many of the flaws you mentioned, but I also realized that it was a shifting program that was electronically controlled (enough said).
I agree that the mileage is not stellar in city driving. It sort of comes with the territory though.
VK
98 Qtip

Had to. GF didn't want a manual and she's more important than the car.

Default Tip tips

> It shifts slowly
Yes, there is a one second delay. This may seem slow when you want to shift *now*, but it's not that slow compared to depressing a clutch, shifting, and lifting the clutch. I wish it was faster, but I'm happy with mine. The only time this really bothers me is when I mis-shift. I hate the 2 second delay for the mis-shift and correction. Now that I've been driving the tip for 6 weeks or so, I rarely mis-shift anymore. (The tip was a bit weird at first.)
> takes too long to go into first when coming to a stop
If you don't like waiting for it to go into first, downshift it yourself. The great thing about tip is that it gives you more control than the manual.
If you feel like the tip is fighting you, maybe that's because you're fighting it. As with any aspect of driving, you've got to learn how to effectively use your machine. You don't drive a Quattro the same way you drive a RWD. Likewise, learn how the tip responds in various situations and adjust your style. It's quite rewarding when you get the hang of it.
For us, the tip was a compromise as well, but one I've enjoyed since the day we bought our beloved A4.

Sorry to hear it. I think a stick is the ONLY way to go. A car with so much more feel and response. I absolutely hate automatics or even Tip. I've never owned anything but a stick and hope that doesn't ever have to change.
It's preference I know, but even with a stop and go 1 hour commute, I'd rather drive the stick.
BTW, I've taught a few of my girl friends to drive sticks. I think all people need to know how anyway. If a life or death situation came up and the only car to drive is a stick, you better know how!

Default GF and a clutch

Back when I first got my license, my parent only had automatic cars. I started dating a girl who drove a 5-speed Fiat. She was the one who taought me how to drive a stick. She wasn't my first love, but she's the old girlfriend I remember!
