TIP Chip
Hey guys, I've got a 98 2.8 Tiptronic and I was looking for some feedback from others that have installed the GIAC TIP chip in your cars. I intent to order the GIAC ECU chip this week and am trying to decide if I should spend $250 on a TIP chip or a Carbon Dynamic BMC airbox. What do you TIP owners think?

You don't "need" the tip chip. I ran my 98.5 chipped...
for nearly two years and never had the tip chip. It will better your shifting though, so there is no reason NOT to get it. However you don't need to rush out and buy the tip chip right away.

2nd, no need to get it right away but it makes a difference.
on the other hand, i say forget about an airbox other than the stock one. i have not seen any improvements from custom or an evo intake. only thing has been a constant cleaning of the MAF sensor. Plus with out good heat shields, they only suck in hot air into the turn making the intake temps go thru the roof. adding a heatshield to the current stick box might help a bit. I'm not sure if its placebo or not but the stock airbox seems to help a the turbo spool faster than cai intakes in TIP or auto cars. i'm not sure about those carbinio (spelling) other carbon fiber boxes.

The shop tuned for two days trying to figure out what was happening. On the third day they called Garett at GIAC and had him work through the problem by sending a files over email to the tuners.
The result was a Tip chip and it solved the problems. As I explained, I have a '97, which is pre-tiptronic transmission, so your car may be different.

agreed...
i ran my 99.5 1.8t for nearly 2 years with 3 different chips (neuspeed .8, 1.0, apr 1) without the tip chip..then in decemer i gave in and got the giac chip and tip chip. very happy with my decision.its not a must but consider it in the near future.
