Is there a VW or Porsche dealer near you? They should know how to fix the tip system.

As far as I can tell the tip/regular auto determination and tip shifting is done by little magnets on three little plastic sliders just under the ridged dust cover. The sliders sit in a groove under the cover and get pushed around when the stick moves. When a magnet gets close to one of about 5 or so sensors the tranny does something. The switch can't really *break* but I suppose if one of the little sliders came off the track it wouldn't move close enough to the sensor to put it into tip mode.

To remove your shift **** just put the stick in drive and slide down the chromed thing just below the ****. Then with one hand pulling the thumb button out towards the driver side as far as it will go yank up on the leather **** with your other hand and keep your head out of the way. Gently pry up the plastic surround with a small tool near the lighter. Once that is up pull the piece towards the rear of the car to get it out from under the ashtray. The chrome shiftgate surround is attached with 4 tiny clips. These are delicate if it is cold but they pry away easily with just a fingernail. Once you have that off you have full access to the sensor magnets and mechanisms. Just pay attention to how they are placed before removing them.

ALSO! None of this may be accurate for non-DBW cars. This info comes from my own fidling on my '00 tip.

AND. If someone spills a drink on your shifter those little plastic sliders may stick together and make for very bad shifting... trust me. Easy enough to clean though.

YMMV Good luck.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be a bad solenoid valve.
