Default How bad were the RSAs? / Tire swaps

OK, I get that you hated the RSAs. However, I like an all season tire on my car here in the Phila area (I live off exit 3 of I-476) and am considering swapping FOR them. Did the RSAs squeal during hard cornering, or did you just think they were squirmy?
My only other option will be to get an outfit like NTB to swap the Dunlops for the Michelin Pilots that I really want. I don't know how much of a hassle that might be.
I'd be interested to know how much of an improvement you feel you get with the SP8000s.
By the way, the archive that had your previous post about the 180hp A6 1.8T has mysteriously disappeared, so I never saw if you responded to my questions. What car magazine reviewed it so I can read up it?

Default I went from SP8000 to RS-A when I swapped. Now I want to go back!

The RS-As don't seem to hold the corners very well in turns. They have never squealed on me. I'm thinking about going with Pirelli P7000SS 225/50R16s.
David

Default Re: How bad were the RSAs? / Tire swaps

I remember when I test drove the A4 with the RSA's that I easily was able to make the tires squeel when cornering (obviously it was on one without the sport suspension). I sold my SP8000s and put on Dunlop D60A2s because I wanted an all-season tire. I have never heard these Dunlops squeel. (The D60A2s are OK in the snow - not great though).
Tom
1.8TQMS Silver/Ecru

Default Email Me (more)

The RSA's never squealled or howled really, just slipped alot during cornering, and made me feel VERY uneasy even with Quattro.
As for the 180hp 1.8t A6, it was in a Greek car magazine. I still have to dig out the particular issue from one of my suitcases ( i bought like 4-6 different ones). Email me as a reminder, and I'll take some scans of the mechanical data. Since I dont have a web page, I ( as well as the rest of the Org) will rely on you to post them for us!
The cars tested included:
A6 180 hp 1.8t manual quattro
MB E200 Kompressor manual (someone said it should have been a 230, but we'll see)
BMW 523 Auto (strange)
Saab 9-3 2.0t manual
Alfa 166 ( I think) manual
New Citroen or Opel (not sure) manual
The article generally leaned on the A6 & MB, with the Audi getting a slight advantage. They couldnt believe that a 1.8L could make 180 hp!!

Default All-season tire for A4

I've done a lot of reading boards, and checking things out recently, and all things considered, it seems to me that the best compromise all-season performance tire is the Dunlop SP Sport 4000 A/S. I think it should be better than the P7000 SS for one reason - Steve Sherwood has a set, and complains that they are really loud and the tread life is low (now, admittedly, the way he drives, well, um . . . .). My f-in law has the P6000 Sport Veloce, which is also a nice tire, but it too is somewhat loud (and it's a touring tire). From what I've read, it seems that Pirelli in general sacrifices quiet ride for performance; TTFWIW. The 4000 will be worse in the snow than the D60A2, but if you drive in enough snow to be annoyed by this, I'd suggest you get a set of snows and summers and swap em. A close second IMHO is the Bridgestone Potenza RE 940.
Now I expect to be flamed for this post, but I am really interested in some more discussion on the subject. I am looking for tires for my subaru legacy wagon, currrently shod with 195/60/15 Potenza RE-92's, which I think are really good tires. They _rarely_ squeal while cornering, I think primarily because of the very low center of gravity of the Legacy - it's best attribute IMO. However, I am willing to pay more for an even better tire, and want better performance with a quieter ride, but I want an all-season tire because this is the family truckster, whose safety is penultimate in all weather, but it rarely snows here in texas.
IMO, there's little doubt that the RSA is not worthy competition for the tires mentioned above.
Comments?
Darryl
98.5 1.8T qmsb
95 Legacy (what's the Japanese word for Avant?) m

Default Re: All-season tire for A4

On our '92 325i we recently put on a set of Yokohama AVS S4. The handling is much more nimble than with D60A2, and they corner better, don't hydroplane as much, and the ride is smoother. They're V-rated.

Default Avoid the Badyears like the plague! (more)

There are plenty of far superior all season tires available. I would suggest the Bridgestone Potenza RE-940 as a top choice. Heck, even the Continentals are better than the RS-A's! Also check offerings by Dunlop and Pirelli.
Charles
