tire width question......

What is the largest width I can go on a lowered a4 without hitting? 225..235...245
I am considering 245/40/17

it depends a lot on the shape of the tire shoulder.

Also, not all tires are created equal. One 225 width tire can be wider than another (different brand or model)

Also factoring into the equation is offset of the wheels. Not only for clearance on fenders, but also suspension components on the other side.

Do Audi and BMW have similar bolt patterns (can we wear Bimmer rims?)

The Audis are typically 5x112. IIRC, the BMWs are 5x114.5.

no , audi is 5 x112 , BMW is 5 x 98 ( if I remember correctly )
