Transmission Multifunction Switch

well i bought an 1997 a4 5 months ago and after about a month of driving it everyday it quit going into reverse and the p 1 2 3 4 & R lights came on on the dash so i looked on here and found that the Transmission Multifunction Switch more than likely had went out so i went and bought a brand new one and installed it the way it sayed on one of the post from this site. was not that bad. i went to see if that worked and nothing changed.
This is my first audi and dont know very much about them.

1. Do i need to reset the computer with a vag scan tool before the new part will start working?
2. My radio is flashing safe. Well this have anything to do with my problem?
3. when i move through the gears the shifter butten comes out in every gear besides reverse. Is this normal?

Yes, you must clear all codes in the TCU with a VAG-COM to restore normal operation. There might be bad relay or something else with the stuck button in reverse, never heard of that before. You can test the relay with the VAG-COM tool.

Your radio says safe because you disconnected the battery. Hope you have the radio code for it.
