Transmission Problem?

My '01 1.8t quattro is making some really irritating noise in first and only first gear. Sounds almost like something is loose and rattling. Is that a sign that my transmission has been beat to hell and needs to be replaced? I'm getting ready to install a K04 upgrade and I don't want to blow it w/ the additional power. Anyone have any ideas?

That is a first gear missing a tooth. Is it a clicking noise that you can only hear in first? clicks faster as you speed up? I had the same problem with my transmission and had first gear replaced at the same time as having some syncros replaced.

Iv'e noticed that this seems to be common on B5's.

That's exactly what it does. I haven't heard that before, but it makes sense. That sounds like a pretty involved job though.

how long has it been making the noise? should be good for another 15k..mine does that with a t28..

having a KO4 should be no problem.

its been since ive owned the car....so about 4500 miles.

then there is really no telling how long it has left.. I would just drive it untill it goes..

A tranny swap would be in order. I would suggest a new used tranny instead of a gear box rebuild. It's a pain in the *** and might even cost more than some deals you can find on a used tranny. Can you get a sound clip of the problem?

Ebay (kinda shady), More expensive quality used from, www.shokan.com, Force5Auto..

plenty of places to turn to.. Just depends on price and overall quallity. Search google for tranny's for your car. you should get some online sites that will send a request for your part out to hundreds of shops to respond back with prices. Best of luck.. if your planning on going Big Turbo in the future a 2.8 tranny might be a better swap.
