Limp mode. Lots of rain recently? TCU swimming? Have you pulled codes?

What 4Driver4 means is that if there are clogged drains, such as under the battery, or the sunroof drains, water can get into the car and tends to flood the transmission computer, otherwise known as the TCM. This can cause all kinds of automatic transmission malfunctions, and I hear it means the computer at the very least has to be dried out, but usually replaced. I'm only telling you what I hear; where I am in Southern Cal a rainy day is a rare thing.

is this something i need to get done at audi or can i use a trusted shop i sometimes go to? gears 1-3 work, no reverse,

also i dont know if this matters my car is 97 a4 1.8t fwd

can your transmission just go bad out of the blue? because i havent had any problems with my transmission till this. and the car was owned by my mom and only serviced at audi since day one so it has been taken care of very well

If your trusted shop is familiar with Audis, and you think they are competent, then OK. But be sure that they can scan the Audi's TCM, along with other "modules" such as the air bags and instruments. A common OBD2 scan tool won't be enough. They have to see what the TCM reports when the computer connects with it.

Yes, a transmission can suddenly develop problems, if something breaks. More commonly, the problem happens gradually. When it has rained a lot, and then you have this come up, points to a wet TCM. However, I thought that in limp mode, reverse would still work.
