is it true?

i took my A4 1.8 1996 (130000km done) to a mechanic recently with a gearbox problem. They told me I have to change the whole gear box. I say why the short life span of the gear box and they say it's a norm and usually only last for 5 years. It cost US8500 in my country for a new one and around US4000 for a re-con. What is the price of it usually in your countries for the new and the re-cons? Is there any options I should go for?? Maybe other models available or options. Recently, I also change the steering rack because of LHM oil leak due to a seal which cost me US1200. Can't they just fix the seal only? Do you guys face this kind of problems also?

I just had a new steering rack put in. Cost for the part only was $900 CDN = less than $600 USD.

I hear ya - I had to get a loan (albeit from my Dad - better rate hehe) to pay for mine. :-(
