Default Value after engine replacement?

Due to the infamous sludge problem, my '01 A4 is getting a new engine and turbocharger at 67000 miles. In your experience, does this increase, decrease, or have no effect on the value of the car?

If you're curious, I changed the oil every 5000 miles and started using synthetic as soon as the warning came out. Car likely only had oil changes every 10000 before I bought it with 29000 miles.

Default no way... you know the cars been ragged out

if the owner was up front about it, i would not purchase the car. if he didn't say anything about it, i wouldn't be happy when i found out later...

Default I don't entirely agree with this statement

What if the previous owner was an older couple(or a non enthusiast who doesn't learn more about their car on internet forums) who followed Audis' advice religously but lo and behold 5000 miles before Audi tells them to replace the timing belt it breaks at 60mph resulting in bent valves and all the other goodies a broken timing belt causes.

This would be an unfortunate incident but that doesn't mean the car was "Ragged out".

I think that if the previous owner was up front about it I think it would be a non issue. However I would also be quite upset if he/she tried to hide it.

I am not trying to start something and am just offering an additional opinion, I hope I didn't step on your toes.

2nd. Ragged out cars usually have plenty of other signs too.

Default I wouldn't buy a car that had the engine replaced

When I buy cars, I want them to be as bone stock as possible. I was mad when I found out my starter was replaced with a refurb :P

Default that's just ignorance talking

You have to look at the big picture. Ask questions, and you'll figure out whether the owner attempted to take care of the car.

Ultimately, an informed buyer could end up with a car that has a relative new engine/tranny/whatever.

Of course the vast majority of buyers are ignorant, so....

To answer jeffmo's question more directly, it's not likely to help your resale. It will scare away a number of buyers, and for the right buyer, it will become a selling point. The problem is, the right buyer falls in the minority.

Default I see where you're coming from. But with a used car-- if I didn't replace the motor,

I would have a hard time trusting it done by an aftermarket shop. Even the dealer can botch up a job like that and rather than deal with that, I'd skip it and find a car that hasn't had a heart attack before I got my hands on it.
