Default What's wrong with it? Seems like a good idea to me if you have issues with them backing out

with an aftermarket manifold.

The bolts holding the turbine housing onto my holset had similar pieces to keep them from backing out. It works awesome.

what's wrong with that method? Lots of car manufacturers do it. A pain to chisel them out first

What's wrong with it? Easier than safety wire...

Default the instant the bolts/nuts decide to move, bolt tension is lost 100%

bolt tension is a function of the bolt stretch, think of the bolt as a spring. how many fractions of an inch do you think a bolt stretches on preload? its a very small number, thus a very small angle the nut/bolt would need to rotate lose all preload.

those things basically require the bolt/nut to back out to work. (if there is any gap or give, forget it) vibration and thermal expansion alone will take care of that.

maybe those things will prevent a nut from completely unwinding, but from a functional point of view, once the bolt preload is lost its game over.
