Default What to do...
So, I've had my A4 for about a year now, and I think I've been bitten by the mod bug. I've been getting increasingly bored with the stock performance of my car, so, what should I do? 1997 2.8 12V 5-Speed.

Lift up the hood. remove the radiator cap. Drive a 1998 or newer under it. install cap close hood.

Done

Not really many mods that really do anything. You can go to 17-18" rims, exhaust, a short shifter. All will make the driving experience more fun.

Best upgrade is suspension and rims.

Not many go-faster mods unfortunately.

Ugh, eff me. Any ECU flashes? What about the 30V?

No chip for US spec Hitachi ECU.

If you want a 30 valve, sell your 12 valve and buy one.

IMHO all the V6s are nice cars very smooth and reliable, but if you want lots of power you need boost.

A4s aren't hard to find, changing to an entirely different motor is not cost effective in a 15 years old car.

You can find S4's in the $6-8000 range. Buying an A4 1.8T and chipping it would make more sense.

Yeah, I hear where your coming from, but I like my car, and don't really want to get rid of it. I guess I'll just get 17" - 18" Audi rims, and a short throw shifter to make everyday driving more fun.
