Default What a learning experience!

So my brother and I finally finished up our project on his 1997 A4 1.8TQ - So we tore down the car to replace the turbo and do a complete timing belt job (belt, tensioner, waterpump, coolant, blah, blah, blah!) So yeah the turbo install is what we did first and it went really well, wasnt to hard except the turbo to cat bolts were hard to get at and i did have some issues with the turbos oil return line. After we finished up the turbo we started the removal of the front end... it went pretty well and we got everything removed then started taking off the engine cover... well turns out the belt and tensioner was changed at 120k miles! We had no records so we werent sure of it though the guy that sold it said it was always properly maintained at the Audi dealer in New Jersey... So we ended up just putting everything back on after changing a few accessory belts and filled it with the proper G12 (someone had switched it over to the green stuff). We changed the oil, notably we switched to the Larger Mann oil filter which i am glad we switched to, its a much better filter. So basically this car gave us a real learning experience and really gave us a look at how these cars are engineered, its pretty cool how some of the stuff is put together. Well thats about it, thought i would just type up something about my experience with this fine german automotible.

Umm, how could you tell when the tb was changed just by looking at the engine?

Default 2nd...you would be able to tell it was changed because the 97's

use the older style tensinor but wouldn't be able to tell at what mileage it was done.

Default I've seen mechanics leave a sticker under the hood when work like that was performed...

though generally they'll leave it somewhere obvious so you don't have to tear apart the front of the car to find the damn sticker. :-P

Maybe the technician marked the milage on the belt or on the tensioner?

I am assuming that the belt was changed yes, but the car does have the updated style tensioner and the belt looks as new as the one we purchased. The dealership the car was purchased from seemed very honest and mentioned that the car was always serviced on time at the audi dealer in new jersey. So yes were assuming, but because of the physical appearance of the parts i would say it was changed at 120k miles, the parts just look way too new, not like parts with 70k mile of wear. And the new turbo is great, i didnt think this car had much torque, the new turbo really helped out with this area.
