What are some causes for the Check Engine light to come on?

What are some causes for the Check Engine light to come on?
The light came on when I started up the car this morning. I am 3/4 of the way through the gas tank and the cap is screwed on tightly, so I don't think that is it. I also turned the car off and restarted once to see if it would still be lit and it was.
I am out of warranty now and only have 1 more month to go on the lease, so I'd really rather not bother bringing this car in for service.
Any ideas on what I should check myself before bringing it into the dealer?
