MonkeyLover had a slight, err, offroad excursion with his car. Had it towed back onto the road, during his trip to work the next day it started making noise and set a CEL. Noise was bad enough he declined to drive it, had it towed to my shop.
I started the car the next day, no noise. Drove it into the bay, no noise.
Hooked up my VAG-COM.... cam chain tensioner makes loud noise.
Shut the car off, pulled codes...
Cam/crank correlation errors. Rut Roh....
Pull upper timing cover.. that is what I found. Crank at TDC, cam off by what, four teeth.
Tensioner intact, roller intact, belt tight, water pump intact, all teeth on belt intact.
I pulled the valve cover because sometimes the cam will sieze when the engine sludges and the pulley keeps going with the front half of the cam, but his engine looks clean.
Did the timing belt, drove the car, runs great, no noises no codes.
So somehow it skipped four teeth.. and kept running.
Monkey made out pretty well, I did three timing belts today, his was the last one, so I only charged him the labor I needed to hit my goal today
