Windshield replacement
1) I assume that any good glass shop can get a replacement piece (from PPG?) and do the work. Correct?
2) About how much will it cost?
At the time I bought my '98, one of the big discussion items on this forum was excessive w/s distortion. That seems to have gone away. Anyone seen this come back with replacement glass?

I insisted on a factory-original replacement. The company that I ended up selecting was going to send up a truck and replace it outside in the parking lot during the workday. Since it was winter, I was concerned about how the sealant would set, so I asked the guy at a local body shop if I could bring my car in and have the installer do the work in one of his empty bays. He agreed. The installation went flawlessly.

Here in Massachusetts, auto glass is covered 100% by standard auto insurance with no deductible. My cost was merely the aggravation and hassle.
I've never noticed any excess distortion, either with the original glass or the replacement glass.

1. Yes, any competent glass shop should be able to handle. If you go OEM glass, the plus is that you are virtually insured of a good fit, but, hey you're getting glass that seems to crack easily. FWIW, none of the replacement glass (OEM or otherwise) that I had were ever annoyingly distorted as what came with my A4 originally (my S4 wasn't nearly as bad).
2. I seem to recall a price tag (NorCal area) of about $565 to do the swap using OEM glass. Check your insurance company, though, most have different/lower deductibles for glass replacement (mine was $100 deductible).<p>Sharon
