While the OEM calipers use 1 large piston, nearly 3 inches in size, these 8-piston Brembo's have pistons smaller than 1 inch in size. They are actually staggered, 1 large, 1 small.
When the brake pedal is pressed, leverage multiplies the force applied from the pedal to a vacuum booster. The booster multiplies the force again and acts upon a piston in the master cylinder. As force is applied to this piston, pressure in the hydraulic system increases, forcing fluid through the lines to the pistons inside the calipers. Depending on the size of the pistons, this force is multiplied again, which inturn press's the pads onto the rotors.
The OEM, 1 large piston calipers, have a single force output, in a small area of the small diameter rotors, in relation to pad size.
The 8-piston calipers have 8 pistons, appling less force than the single piston caliper, however with 4 pads, they cover a much larger area of the larger rotor, which effectively gives you better braking, for less pedal effort. ;O)
