Generally means it needs to be recharged. It does not allow the compressor to be engaged if you are low on freon to prevent damage.

I think he's saying the opposite. It appears to be always on, and refuses to go into "econ" mode. I've never seen one "fail" in this manner. Perhaps the button on the HVAC head unit is broken?

Good clarifier. If the ECON light is off, the compressor will engage based on demand; if the ECON light is on, it will not. I assumed you were describing the latter. Which is it?

My misunderstanding then. If it's always ON, then it's likely your system has an insufficient R134a charge. If so, find the leak, fix it, and then have it recharged to spec.

Is there an easy way to find the leak?

Shops usually service the system with 134a with a dye in it that will locate the leak when it leaks out. They evacuate the system, work the leak, and then recharge. I have never done A/C work myself. Just don't want to invest in the tools.`

Roll up your sleeves and check all the lines on the system. There's o-rings where the lines connect together. Also check the condenser and the A/C compressor. You're looking for greasy goo that is the result of refrigerant oil attracting dirt.

Getting isn't the issue. I don't know what to look for or where to look for it.
