Default Do memory savers work for battery replacement on audi.

Has anyone tried one of those memory savers when replacing the battery? Is there enough current capacity in that little battery to hold the memory functions while the battery is out. I would think opening the door one time could screw that up when the lights come on. My radio was replaced before I bought my car and the shop that did it didnt' bother to include the new code. So I figured this would be a cheaper option then having to pay a dealer (local dealers are being ****ty) to retrieve the code. Any way I can retreive this with the VAG-COM? Or anyway I can reactivate it without the code using the VAG-COM? Thanks!

Can't get it with VAG-COM. You need the code to reactivate it.

Battery saver? Don't know. Got another car nearby and some jumper cables? That will have plenty of capacity to keep your car alive while you swap batteries.

The dealer I went to charged me $50 to get the code. That's about 1/2 hour of shop time. The technician probably spent close to that, what with pulling the radio, talking on the phone to AoA, washing my car, etc.

If you're going to keep the car for a few years, I'd go get the code.

leave the car running. disconnect the battery cables, remove the old battery, put the new one in, connect the battery. its that easy. we do it all the time here ( i work at a Ford dealer).

Default My battery died last week and all my memory functions were saved.....

I think it's pretty common that personalization settings are stored in non-Volitale EEPROM in most electronics these days.

Default Disconnect while the car is running? VERY bad idea.

Doesn't work on all cars -- depends on how the electrical system is set up. Some cars will run only off the alternator, other need the battery for ground. So it's not a comprehensive answer.

Besides that, the battery acts as a big filter for the current. Voltage spikes can take out a lot of the sensitive electronics. Fry an ECU lately?

And you'd better be really careful about letting the positive cable terminal touch anything.

Not a great idea, even if it can work.

To the original poster: yes, the memory savers work. But only if the cigarette lighter is powered with the ignition on -- which the Audis do.

i understand what you are saying. ive done it mostly on fords, which as we know are totally different then audis. but i have also dont this on bmws, vws, etc.... todays electronics on cars arent as sensitive as they used to be. and yes, im always careful with the positive cable.

Is that safe? Can it cause personal injury or fire?

I would not do what is suggested in the this thread, i.e. start the car, disconnect the battery, and install the new one. I have replaced the battery along with disconnecting the battery for maintenance numerous times and the only thing I have had to worry about is resetting the clock. The risk of damaging electronics is higher than the minor inconvenience of resetting the clock.

Thanks for the warning! Yes, I just watched a youtube video and one of the comments below the video said, "You do not require a high refresh rate DVOM to know disconnecting a battery cable while engine is running is harmful to electronics. Batteries do more than just supply electricity. They also short A/C spikes and transients to ground. In most cases you will also have a high risk of shorting out diodes in the alternator. Disconnecting the battery while engine is running can interfere with the voltage regulator’s control voltage input resulting in alternator voltage to go way over the top, in some cases over 100 volts frying everything. Know what you are talking about before you spew your nonsense." I think it makes a lot of sense.
