Default engine check light

Hi guys I'm a new newbie here, I bought a 2002 A4 1.8t 4 door, 5 speed, with 113000 k's I washed the engine compartment and the engine check light came on, I'm not sure on how to get a code. Or can you re-set it?? It's dry, I took her for a little cruise well into the excessive range just to make sure she was dry! I think handles pretty good, I've had a couple of bemmer's over the years. 320i and 2002ti. I could use some of your expertesece.

No telling. I would drive it for a couple of days and see if it goes off by itself. Otherwise, you will have to get codes downloaded. I would highly recommend you get your own VAGCOM reader or locate a friend with one.

So I borrowed a scanner and got the code P1296 which is a cooling system malfunction. So do you need to rip out all the cooling systems sensers????

Does the scanner you borrowed clear codes?

I bet you got a little water in one of the connectors and that threw the code. hopefully the engine heat has dried everything out and once you clear the code it wont show up again...

Fingers crossed for you!

So if I understand, you no longer have the CEL? And you did clear the code? If so, I would give it a little more time. If it continues to happen, it is probably the "green" temp sensor at the back of the engine. Easy swap and inexpensive.

It could be that you cooled a part of the cooling system down abnormally with the water and the temp sensor saw it like a stuck open thermostat and set the code.

She was cold as ice... I'm not one for cooling down the engne by throwing cold water at it... I'll start with the back (green) senser first....
