Default Fans running wild - fixed!

I had posted some time ago about my fans running on super high jet speed while the car was running. After doing many hours of research on AW and other VW/Audi forums, I suggested to my mechanic that after replacing both fan switches/sensors, that the fan control module was not the culprit, but the thermostat. After some hemming and hawing, he replaced it and I have not had any problems since. It ran me about $400 total including 3 hours of labor and $113 for the part plus $30 for an installation kit. A small price to pay for almost two years of scratching my head.

Boy, would like to understand this. My understanding is the green and black temp sensors are what drive the fans and you would see this in the temp gage, not the thermostat directly. Did your mechanic give you a detailed explanation?

When he removed it, he showed me that there was a crack in the housing that could not be seen until you got in there to do it. However, I'm having my fan control module replaced now because my fans are running when the car is completely shut off and it's an intermittent problem. Might happen within minutes or days. Dealership wants to charge me over $1,000 which includes diagnostic work! Part is $316 shipped from ECS and can't be more than a few hours labor? Anyone want to back me up on that?

So sounds like 2 issues. Thought I understood how the car worked.

Anyway, no idea on the price of the fan module, although to me if the fans run when the car is off, doesn't seem like the module is the problem. Typically, fans running with the car off is an indication that you have voltage flowing when it shouldn't (a short) which in my reading points to water in the ECU relay box. Bad fan modules usually exhibit themselves when the car is started and they both immediately turn on when they shouldn't. Lots of rain in your part of the world?

I show 3 choices on the fan control module, depends on engine but the price is 241.80 for any one of them. If you need this we'd like to help you out and save you money as well.
