Default That's a nice process, but tell that to an new ower of a CVT A4 that ....

moves out into traffic quickly with less than 10 miles on the car, and the engine revs instantly to 5000 rpm and stays there for very long periods of time. It's just the nature of the CVT car. I doubt that this car is going to burn oil constantly, overheat the engine parts, etc because the engine wasn't broken in properly....Audi wouldn't design that into the CVT system, or would they?

Default Funny you should mention....

I thought the same thing. Also, it's hard to vary the RPM with a transmission that doesn't want to do that. If I were to do break-in all over again, I'd probably leave the transmission in Tip mode and switch manually to run the engine through a wider range of speeds. Hopefully it won't make any difference down the line, but who knows...

Default Well, I would imagine that's why they have the stepped "ratios"

But, with the technology built into todays engines, I don't believe that straying away from the standard in break-in will account for much over the long haul.

Default I find it quite easy to vary the engine and road speed by careful application of the throttle

after all, its all based on throttle angle, its quite easy to drive grandma style.

Default Ive had my car for 20K... and no problems...

I drove the frist thousand or so miles very gently and after that, I drove it however I wanted.. I have not had the oil light come on nor had a depeltion fo oil when I checked with my dipstick occasionally... Germans make tough engines and the 1.8t has been used for so long on so many VAG vehicles.. I doubt break-in procedures vary your engine life by and significant amount..

Default Bob, I've got a CVT and unless I punch it or manually shift it doesn't go to 5K RPM's for any...

...great lenghth of time if at all.

In fact it stays much lower, about 4K, where it has better torque. Still, for the first painful 500, 1000, 1500 miles I followed the break-in. The doc's right - you can vary and control the RPM with the CVT. I'll give you that most owners won't be as conscientious as people here and will blissfully ramp the RPM's to their heart's content.

Default Is it just me (m)

or does the throttle pedal tolerate some amount of travel without significantly changing the RPM? I drive a lot of freeway miles and I notice that at speed, I can play with the pedal and not get too much "kickdown". If I go past this ~1/2 inch or so of play, the engine will hop from 2.5k to 4k until I back off the throttle, at which point it drops back down to 2.5k.

Even in city driving, I find that RPM's stay relatively fixed during acceleration. Maybe I need to use my right foot more...
