HELP!!! PLEASE!!!
Hi, I own a 2001 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T, las monday I was going to work and I start the engine, It was SHAKING like crazy!!, I was very scared and worry about it ( I dont have more warranty ), the problem is the following: I took it to the dealer and they told me I had a BAD ECU!!, I was WTF!!!, I was checking here in the search features, and I thinck it can be a coilpack, PLEASE GUYES I NEED YOUR HELP!!, BTW, when I shut down the engine and wait for a minute or two, it started OK, but when you are driving, SOMETIMES happens, and when this happens I hear the exhaust and the noise of it is like an helicopter, ( like 3 cylinder ), what should I do, Check coilpacks, and replace them and erase all the codes, or is the REAL problem the ecu??
PS: NO CHIP, 19.000kilometer., NO WARRANTY!!

Sure its not just a bad spark plug or something?
If the dealer says its the ECU, why can't they erase it and reprogram? Or, but that'll be more expensive, have them replace the ECU in total.
I'd ask for a no cure, no pay arrangement!
Anyway, if it really is the ECU you could cause even more damage if you don't fix it.

Ask the dealer for the printout of their diagnostic codes
they will give this to you if they did any diagnostics with a VAG Tool. Then once you have all of the error codes you can post them here and someone could tell you what the problem is.
If it is the ECU, figure $500-700 for a new ECU. Aftermarket coilpaks are about $400-500 for a set with a trade-in of your old paks.
Spark plugs are the least expensive at a few dollars each. Try removing each coil and checking the spark plugs to begin with.

If it was an ECU the car will probably not start.. usaully the ecu will have a direct effect all cylinders. preventing fuel or spark. I agree get a copy of the VAG print out. Did it happen to be damp outside, raining outside? let me know I might be able to check the technician bulletins.

Spoke to a few friends in the industry today. They say alomst definitely a coil pack problem... you need to get a VAG tool and see if the ECU is reporting anything...Apprently it will tell you
