Hitachi E coil update....
after the events in the above post, I pulled the coils and checked the plugs, and everything appeared fine. Plugs are NGK BKR6EIX iridium plugs, with ~5k on them.
wife's car misfired again on cold start on way home from work yesterday, same symptoms as before, rough idle with flashing then solid CEL once idle returned to normal. Scanned the codes, and got the following:
Random Multiple cylinder misfire (sporadic)
Cylinder 1 misfire (sporadic)
Cylinder 2 misfire (sporadic)
Cylinder 3 misfire (sporadic)
Cylinder 4 misfire (sporadic)
If there were ever any misfires with the "newer" coils, they were not enough to set off a CEL. I'm going to put the "new" coils back in and see if the misfires persist. GRRRRRR
I plan on grinding down this ridge on the head of my engine to get the coil to seal. I will also be using some dialectric grease on the plug connection. Using the grease regardless would not be a bad idea under any circumstance.
