Default Missing Sensor?

Need your help...

2002 A4 Quattro 1.8t tiptronic

I was doing a lower control arm job today when I happened to look in the wheel well on the driver side and noticed a machined hole, about 18-20mm in diameter with a tapped hole next to it. I could see the teeth of the flywheel through the larger hole. It looks like some time of sensor should be there. Am I missing some kind of Hall sender?

Bump...

I should mention. The hole is on the drivers side of the bell house. It is very near the back of the engine, as the teeth of the flywheel can be seen.

I searched my entire Bentley manual to try to find an answer the other day but came up with nothing. I was under my car yesterday changing the fuel filter, but I have a manual transmission so I can't really relate. Pictures usually help in this type of situation.

Thanks all. I have had no lights, or issues of any kind. I will try to post a picture later though, just to be thorough.

I was perusing through another Audi forum and someone suggested it was used to set the timing on the car. The owner in the other forum had a 3.0, but would think Audi would use something similar on the 1.8T. I still haven't had a chance to look at mine...

Your description is a little foggy, but it sounds like that is the normal viewing hole in the crankcase that allows for reading of timing marks and visual inspection on the flywheel.
