P0704-clutch switch input circuit malfunction

The check engine light came on recently on my daughter's A4 3.0 MT6. The code is P0704 with description "clutch switch input circuit malfunction" and "clutch pedal input circuit malfunction". Search turned up one post, no answers, and I PMed the poster. Any ideas what causes this, is it dangerous to drive the car, and how and how much to fix it?

It sounds like the clutch pedal switch might be malfunctioning. It works much like the brake switch so the car knows when it is safe to start or turn off cruise control. Let me see if I can find the switch and I'll post a link to it tonight or tomorrow.

This is the clutch pedal switch for your car. It may not be reporting its position properly to the computer.
