Default Power steering fluid

Can I simply top off my steering reservoir with Pentosin CHF 7.1? The last fill was Audi factory and the part numbers are not easy to recognize.

CHF 7.1 appears to be a pretty universal fluid and it is mineral based.

Loss of assist is getting anoying and the pump groaning bugs me.

I believe pentosin is fine.

Double-check that this is compatible with what's in there. I've got a can of CHF-11S which is the OEM type fluid for the B5 A4 and Passat I've got. It says "DO NOT mix with CHF-7.1"

Pentosin CHF-11S is the OEM fill for power-steering fluid for Audi power-steering systems. Most NAPA auto-parts stores have the CHF-11S in-stock due to it's use as the specified hydraulic fluid of a number of popular high-end European heavy-equipment manufacturers.

Default Steering fluid update

1. Bought the Audi OE fluid and refilled reservoir and system.
2. Dealer tried to sell me a new rack which he claimed was leaking but there is no evidence of any fluid leaks.
3. This was the first fluid top off since June of 2002.

Excellent! Now that you've got the correct power-steering fluid in the power-steering system, the steering system should behave as designed. Just keep an eye on the power-steering fluid level, since even a slightly-low fluid level can lead to the PS system sucking the reservoir dry, which can prompt power-steering pump cavitation, resulting in a "groan" noise in the PS system.

Most of the ZF stuff on the car is pretty reliable and bullet proof. You simply need to ensure the right specs are adhered to, hence my questions. The ZF 5 HP 24 trans. is still operating great, no clutch slip or lash at all. At 160,000 miles, I've got a way to go to get to my 250,000 mile target.

Just did a complete flush on my '02 1.8TQM with Pentosin 11S. The old stuff absolutely stank and was dark brown. Now it's stench free and light green.
