Problems using gear for parking
When parking - especially on hills - I always place the car in gear in addition to the parking brake as with any manual. I undid my parking brake a couple of days ago and the car was not stopped by the gearing. Kind'a scary should the brake ever fail.
Thing is, it seems to be intermittent. However, I can't seem to reproduce an exact sequence of events (shifting in gear before turning off the engine, shifting in gear after turning off the engine, 1st vs. 2nd gear, etc.) that will cause one or the other.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
With a manual, the reverse gear is generally the best to leave it in, although in some situations you should use 1st gear.
Anyone else have anything to add?
That's part of why you should also turn your wheels in toward the curb when you park, so at least it won't roll straight back if something like that were to happen.
1. Set P-Brake and release foot brake so that the parking brake is the only thing holding the car.
2. Turn wheel about 1/2 turn from straight (towards the curb if facing down hill and away if facing up hill) so that if the brake fails the tread of the tire will roll into the curb and hold the car without damaging the rim.
3. Put the car in first gear (or reverse... no diff) as a "last resort"
4. Turn the car off, walk away and look over my shoulder. Never forget to look over your shoulder!
