Requesting advice...

Here's the situation:

I currently have a 2003 3.0 sedan.

I hate my wifes Outback.

What would you get?

A 1.8t Avant or a Passat 4MO wagon

Go Audi, it wont be such a step down when you drive it after you drive yours...

plus it looks better.

devil's advocate: get the Passat

It's a little roomier, the ride is smooth, the price is comparable, and it has more power stock.

Depends on how much you need the back seat space in the Passat.

Rear seat room in an A4 is cramped, anyway you look at it. The passat has a little more breathing room, especially if you have growing children. If seating space isn't an issue, I would probably opt for the A4 (you'd have to chip it of course...which opens up another can of worms, if you're concerned about warranty issues, etc.).

Depends on whether you want pure function or function plus the style and sport the Avant provides.

I looked at both and chose A4 Avant 1.8t

To get 4mo in the Passat, you have to get the V6 (190 hp, I believe) and you have to get an automatic transmission. I got the 1.8T quattro with a stickshift for $27.5K (add $1.2K or so for the tip). I think to get a Passat wagon 4mo, you'll end up over $30K.

Passat wagon does have a little more room, but the A4 has yet to disappoint me on that count. I've also driven Passat V6s (no 4mo) as loaners and have been disappointed in the power. A4 has better road feel too.

If you're definitely getting a tip, I would think twice about the 1.8T (unless you're going to chip it). With the tip, the 1.8T has even less oomph than the Passat 4mo.

And personally, I think the A4 looks better, though that was not a big issue for me.
