Default Swap HVAC Controller - Basic settings

I swapped HVAC controller because the old one had the recirc led on all the time. The rear defog won't work on the new unit. When you release the button, the light goes off. I will tear the thing out and check all the connectors. The part number was exactly the same except the letters at the end were different. Is this a problem? Do I need to reset the "basic settings" to fix this? I have a Vag-com setup and an electronic version of the factory service manual. Vag-com says to "log in" to the controller before you can set basic settings and that the login codes are in the manual. The factory service manual is incomprehensible. Codes nowhere to be found. Any guidance would be helpful.
Thanks, Mike.

Default You need to make sure the coding from the old module is transferred to the new one...

and then you need to go to basic settings channel 0 and let the flaps in the dash learn there positions. If it still doesn't work then that control head wont work on your car. Ideally you want the same exact part number.

Default Yes, the B6/B7 Audi A4 Official Service Manual is a fraud, and is the worst .

example of service documentation I have ever seen offered by any automotive manufacturer. It's not Bentley Publishing's fault, the negligence is Audi of America's failure to act in good faith and provide all of the information available. All of the really important service data is only accessible via the OEM factory service scan tools, used by the dealerships, that's why if you can find any references to the information needed, instead of the expected content, the "service manual" refers the reader to consult the "Guided Fault Finding" and that is NOT provided in the "service manual".

But back to your problem, to reset the vehicle data in the A/C controller, store PIN "26467" in adaptation channel 081. Doing this resets the A/C controller with the VIN for the vehicle the controller is installed into by getting the VIN from the instrument cluster. Reset the A/C to basic settings by opening measuring block 000, and waiting for the values return to the base value of zero for each data block shown.
The A/C controller PN with a different suffix will work, provided the PN suffix is for a 2002>2005 B6 A4/S4.

O.K. I did input the PIN into adaptation channel 081 and the fault for the incorrect VIN has gone away. However, there is still a fault that says "No communication to convertible top controller J256". I assume this controller was formerly in a convert. That may explain why the rear window defog will not engage (which was the original problem I was trying to solve). When I try to open measuring block 000 to reset the basic settings, all I get is "Error". When I shift up and open block 001, all the flap motors cycle and the values eventually return to zero. This appears to have fixed the imbalance between the driver and passenger temps being off a couple of degrees (when they are both set to the same value). How can I get this thing to stop looking for the convetible top controller and possibly fix the non-operating rear defog problem? Maybe this "AG" suffix controller can only go into a convert. The original unit was an "L" suffix.

What's Up?

Default The soft coding stored in the controller provides for specifying the chassis type:

If the controller was in a cabriolet, and is now in a sedan, the coding must be changed.

From de.OpenOBD.org,

The controller coding is as follows,

"00XYZ" where X=0, Sedan, Avant and Coupe
X=1, Cabriolet.

Y=0, Heated windshield, NOT installed.

Y=1, Heated windshield installed.

Z=0, Sun roof with solar electric panel Not installed.

Z=1,Sun roof with solar electric panel installed.

Therefore, the controller coding to enter via function 07, for a Sedan without windshield heating or the sunroof solar electric panel, is

"00000".

The Cabriolet coding is "00100"

Use recode the controller with "00000", and see if the rear window defroster is activated. The heating grid in the rear window will not be energized if the temps are above about 45 deg F, even if the system is activated with the recode.

This makes sense, however, I need a little more detail. I have the Ross-Tech Vag-com setup. Exactly where do I find "function 07"?
Thanks,
Mike

Default It is in the screen view after accessing the A/C controller ..

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/98458/open_controller_view..jpg"></center><p>
After opening the controller with VAG-COM., The radio button that says "Coding 07" is clicked to open the recode controller window. See pic. Also see link to online demo manual for a step through.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/main_screen.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/main_screen.html</a</li></ul>

Yep. That did it. No fault code looking for the convert top controller, no fault code for the recirc potentiometer, and the rear defog WORKS! While I was at it, I subtracted "4" from the convenience controller coding to get rid of that annoying double click to unlock the passenger doors. Whoever though that was a good idea should be shot! At least you can turn it off. I do have some faults for intermittent engine misfire on cyl #4 and random other cyls. What commonly causes misfires? Old plugs? Old wires? I did have one stumbling startup one day. Other than that, it runs fine.
Thanks a million,
Mike

Default Check for a vacuum hose leak/s and spark plug on cyl 4....

Causes of misfires include wrong fuel/air mixture,too rich or lean, and ignition system faults.
