syncro-mesh
There're pretty durable. Hard to mess them up with just one bad shift.
1. Its one word 'syncromesh' (no biggie)
2. The job of the syncros is to match the speed of the two trans shafts so that when the gears come together, they 'mesh'. Without syncros, you can shift smoothly, but you have to match the engine rpm for the gear you are going into relative to the speed you are going (easier done than explained). In fact, if you are good, you can shift without the clutch entirely (except first of course). I used to do that in my Rabbit all the time, but never tried it in the A4.
3. The jolt you felt was your abrupt clutch engagement - nothing to do with the syncros.
4. Syncros are not that durable - they are made from bronze/brass. If you had really bungled it, the gears would have ground - they syncros will match, but don't prevent you from grinding the gears if you work at it, or in this case if your foot falls off the pedal.
