In a nutshell, it applies braking to a wheel that is spinning.

Default Well, that's all mine seems to do anyway, it kills my motor when I try to kill myself driving...
so I just leave it off when I'm feeling stupid.

Default The ESP button also disables ASR and EDL, which do what you're talking about.
ESP only responds to correct sideways skidding (i.e., oversteer or understeer).

Default It's one of those things that's good to have even though you'll hopefully never use it.
In crazy driving situations, and in snow, it's quite effective. In fact, on a dry tarmac, it makes it nearly impossible to lose control (mainly because ESP is able to cut the throttle).
