Default Help

So my car after sitting a while will smoke out of turbo and exhaust a lot for like 2 minutes then goes away. Not sure it's really random definitely happens right after an oil change or sitting for more then a day. After warm up it goes away.

2006 B7 A4 2.0T quattro. 238k miles.
Mezz,
Sounds to me like oil leakage past valve stem seals or a bad seal at the turbo allowing oil to enter the turbo. A car sitting can result in dried up seals. If not too bad just drive it. The seals may come back around.

Also could just be oily ooze accumulated at the low points of the intercooler lines, see this...

Easy to check. Just pop the rubber line off the intercooler at it's lowest point. Have a pan handy.

Good luck and all the best, Haya....

Sounds exactactly like valve stem seals for sure, just as Haya stated, I had a Dodge truck that would do the very same thing, not exactally an Audi but same symptoms, once it warmed up no more smoke. Had the heads rebuilt and smoke went away.

I talked to a couple guys one said valve seals but another said turbo seals and I'm hoping it's that. Cause turbos should be sealed and when it smokes it pours out around turbo which means air is escaping which could be a good thing cause 500 vs 2.5k I'm all for new turbo.

Mezz,
Before you go and replace that turbo....a bad PCV module can result in smoky exhaust. Check that out first.

Haya....

Let us know what you end up finding with a follow-up post. Thx.

Bad turbo seals usually you will see a cloud of smoke on acceleration or boost, my wifes A4 2.0TFSI had a bad turbo and left a huge gray cloud under boost, but if the turbo is toast, I guess it could smoke but should only smoke out the exhaust. I would still lean towards bad valve stem seals, the head may need come off for a refurb.

Make sure your turbo replacement is the OEM brand which is Borg Warner the ,cheap chinese stuff will last only a short time, I know that from personal experience had to change it out again in about four months. And replace the turbo with new oil lines as well, the old ones sludge up and if reused can kill a new turbo in a very short time. Also prime your turbo and fill it up with oil before you even start up the motor for the first time, you dont want to fire up a dry turbo

I bought a stock borgwarner remanufactured tested and everything. Can't afford a brand new one. I'm preying not valve seals just has me second guessing that cause of the amount of smoke coming from turbo under hood. Should all be sealed and not allowed to escape from that area. I appreciate all the wise wisdom.
