Default Key issues

Proud owner of a new to me 2006 A4 2.0T Quattro, 6MT. Unfortunately it only came with one key, none of the valet keys or key tags. The key was working just fine until I decided to remove the back and clean out the dust. Of course the battery fell out, and of course it now won't un/lock the doors and trunk remotely. It's a total pain to have to use the key in the lock every time. The few things that I've read all mention needing a second key in the ignition to do a re-synching of the key programming (which I can't do with only one key). I also went out tonight and bought a new battery for the remote, thinking that the old one was just on the brink anyway. No luck.

So, I have only one key, but it has a new battery. It's still not doing anything. Does anyone have any idea how to make this key work again, or am I just screwed and looking at a trip to the dealer? If so, I guess I'd better get the second key while I'm there.

Thoughts? Thank you.

Please help me out. If anyone has any idea about how to make my key open the doors and trunk, I would really appreciate the help.

I just had the same problem a few weeks ago. Put the key in and turn one click so the dash lights up. Hold the unlock button for about 10 seconds. Done! This only works with a key that is already coded, will not work for a new key.

If you want a secondary key, we can order them, fobs and all, for usually well under dealer cost. If you just want a valet key, we can source those as well. PM me if you are interested.

Thank you very much for this advice, I'll try it this afternoon and let you know how it goes!

This worked like a charm. I actually had to try it twice. the first time I turned the key two clicks (when the dash lights come on), and it did not program, but when I turned it one click to the accessory function, it programmed right away.

Thank you for the solution!

Okay, I have this new key now. It came laser cut and works in my door locks and ignition.

HOWEVER, when I put the key in the ignition and turn it, the car goes into safe mode. The odo stops showing me the mileage and says SAFE instead. The buttons on the key have never worked to lock/unlock the car either, but I figure that's the least of my problems now.

Does anyone know how to pair the key with the car? Is this something that I can do with VAG com or is there a simpler way? OR, am I just screwed and need to head to the dealer? Thanks for your help.

Dealer quotes are 170 for a new key, 95 to program it, plus tax.

A new key from ECS is 135-ish including shipping and tax. So we can order anyone a key, and if you have to goto a dealer to program it you still make out 35 dollars ahead plus whatever tax the dealer would charge too. In the Ohio area you would save about 50 bucks buying a key from ECS Tuning and taking it to a dealer to program.
