Default is this normal?

Took a weekend trip to vermont and went up the auto toll road. For those of you who dont know what that is, its a 3-4 mi stretch that zig-zags up the mountain with an occasional spot of pretty steep incline.
It had been raining and foggy all weekend with the road being pretty slushy certain times (and wasnt the best view of foliage either, oh well).
I think the car did very well, was loving the quattro - never felt this confident driving anything uphill aroung tight steep corners in mud.
However, when we stopped at a spot around 2.5 miles into the drive to take some pictures, I could literally smell and feel the heat from the engine from like 5 yards away. The gauge stayed in the center and didnt show anything abnormal. No lights came on.
There were 4 of us driving with very light luggage. I had to drive in 1st gear almost 60% of the time else it would start lugging.
Ambient was like 45oF.
I just got the feeling that the car was needlessly overheating in a very short period of time.
This is my 1st Audi and Iam not sure what to expect - so, was that normal?

Default You have a 2.0T?

My engine stays warm for awhile after driving it. And if you were driving it in first 60% of the time, I'd imagine the turbo would warm up pretty quick.

Default Yes

Engines get hot. After a lap session at the track, we take a cool down turn around the paddock, mostly for the brakes, but for the engine and turbo housing too. Then most everyone parks with the hood up for what little that may help. I wouldn't give it a thought, but YMMV.

Default 2nd...If you do some hard driving at night, open the hood, you should see some orange glow from...

your HOT turbo - if you get the car chipped and then drive it hard, it will glow rather brightly.
Oh yeah, don't shut the car down if your turbo is glowing. Always let the car idle for a few mins to let it cool down. You will risk damaging the turbo and the oil.
Good practice is to idle the car for about 60 secs for light to moderate driving. Longer if you want to baby it. If you get chipped, then at least 2 mins.
