Service Light reset - Error, dashes only appear

Service Light reset - Error, dashes only appear
my super smart mechanic has attempted to reset my service light. He couldn't figure it out, so i took initiative and read the manual while he fiddled. Instructions are in there *genius. Now he followed the instructions; ignition off, hold service button, ignition on, pres "0.00" etc.
The "service!" no longer appears, but when i press the service button instead of stating 3500 KM or 240 Days to next service it simply says "---- KM or ---- Days". Why are there no values in there, and how can this be fixed? thank you
