Default yet another hardwired detector question - diff method(?)

I know many posts have been shared on how to hardwire the detectors (Passports, V1 etc)... but I just spoke to a VW owner who said he hardwired his V1 right into one of the Map-Lights of the upper center console above the mirror. He said it worked great since his Passat (and Audis?) have a power sensor that will automaticlly cut the power to a circuit left on after 15 min if engine is off... since it thinks there is a battery draw from the map lite left on - it temporarily cuts the power to the detector too when cars is off (and on again when car starts).

Does anyone know if the new B7 has this auto-shut off feature too (as he didnt know himself, and I didnt notice in the Manual). And if so - has anyone tried this method - seemed easier then running cable all the way around the window if you can go 6 inches to the map lite!)

Just curious...

Default i wouldnt do that for one simple reason

aren't the lights going on when you unlock the car...
i guess i don't have technical knowledge about this... but i like having the hardwire on its own fuse keeping the power safe to the detector...

also its not very difficult to run the wire to the fuse panel... it is completely hidden the whole way... so its almost illogical not to use a fuse tap and put the detector on its own fuse (and specifically one that is off when the car is off and on when the car is on)

you don't have to remove the headliner or a-pillar to get the wire inside and completely hidden... and it takes a matter of minutes to do it yourself

Default good point...

makes sense - I read the other posts (yours I think) and was going to go that route - but this idea sounded interesting. Thought Id throw it out there... I didnt want to mess too much with the "offical" wireing myself anyways yet (at least until i know what im doing anyways! )

Default Re: good point...

well yeah again i don't have technical knowledge... i have heard people going the route you suggested...

i dont know if the lights are on when you unlock the doors then you turn the key and the power like gets funny for a second if that effects the detector... im not sure how it works...

but for the passport the hardwire is just a phone cord... so the phone cord is so long i had more than enough room to run it to the fuse panel without worry/issue

i didn't buy the escort hardwire... i made my own out of a phone cord

Default I have a suggestion .

This has not attitude at all behind it but why don't you guys get a wireless detector. Thats what i have and the thing runs great. I have batteries that recharge and i chrage them every three weeks at night. It just seems alot easier to me then having it in there forever and spend all of that time and money. Check it out becuase the one i got was not that much more then the one that has cords.

Default um hardwiring cost me under 20 dollars...

wireless detector does not offer as good of a range...

you also can't see my wire its 100% hidden... so seriously for under 20 bucks to hardwire i would never consider wireless in a second

Default 20 bucks isnt bad.

I dont have my model # in front of me but i get really good distance from mine. Why do the cordless ones not get as much distance? Why would a source of energey effect the distance? Just curiuous.
