Default 2009 Avant sunroof closes, then opens

I've had this problem intermittently with my 2009 Avant. I turn the switch to close the sunroof. The roof closes, only to open back up again (a few inches) as soon as it contacts the front "closed" point. Sometimes I can get it to close completely by doing this 3,4,5 times. Sometime I can close it by pulling the "down" switch and holding it. And sometimes it just closes with no problem. It's pretty strange behavior, and I remember seeing it pretty soon after I got the car. I haven't thought of asking about it when it's been at the dealer's, although I might have to do that the next time I bring it in. Has anyone else seen this, or have a suggestion as to why it's happening? It almost seems as if there's some sensor that detects something near the close point and sends the roof back open.

I had the same issue. I believe they performed a software update to correct it.

If this is the case, then this was the state of the track when the car was delivered, which seems kind of strange. But thanks, and I'll take a look at the track.

Oh really?! Interesting. Well, I'll see if cleaning the track helps. Otherwise I'll talk to the dealer the next time I bring the car in.

My car suffered from this problem exactly as you describe. It required a triple play. The motor supplied was replaced along with the switch (twice) and the software was updated. The sliding surfaces need periodic cleaning and lubrication. There is a special lube for this. The sunroof also has water drains that need a snaking from time to time.

The motor current would change with the ambient temperature. When parked in the sun on a hot day my Deep Sea Blue car would heat the motor to a point that it would falsely sense an obstruction at full closed and snap back open.

The switch had the tactile feedback usually associated with a Russian tank. The second switch had a similar stiff unpleasant feel, but the first time I moved it to pop up the rear of the glass the **** and shaft came off in my hand. The third switch finally had the feel Germans expect in luxury cars.

Yes. It is VW G-000-450-02. It comes in a 85g tube, and can be had at ESC tuning for about $25.

That is cheap. Mercedes need two products, a special sliding compound, and a lubricating paste. Together they cost $115.

Thanks for that... any idea how difficult it is to do this oneself?.. is it just the rubber track itself that needs the lube or is it the geared track?
