The 8-speed gearbox is amazing. I was doing 140km/h at just over 2000rpm. Must be nice for gas.

That is amazing. I was shocked when I was going 75mph at 1900rpm.

At low speeds (10-25mph) I noticed that when down shifting it will engine break or something thrusting you forward. Have you noticed the hard downshifts too?

I've noticed occasional harsh shifts at parking lot speeds. Since the transmission shifts quickly and smoothly at 95% of the time, I can excuse the occasional awkwardness.

I get those violent downshifts even with the 6 speed transmission.

There is a station in my area that has 108 octane gas, what effect would that have on mpg's/performance? Would there be a noticeable difference? Haven't checked in a while but last time I did it was 7.99 a gallon. That's why I'm asking, that's no just a few extra pennies.

In response to the original question, I am getting about 15-16 city, all stop-and-go through the canyons to work.

I absolutely love this transmission. It is so responsive yet so smooth!

Thats racing fuel. No experience with it so I don't know the details. Basically stay away from octanes above 94 if you are operating the car normally.

I have a 2008 A4 Avant. I ran 91 octane from Costco during the first year that I owned it until my mechanic scolded me about "using that crap" and suggested Shell or Conoco premium. I switched to Shell 91 and have used that over the last year. The car is peppy and has more get up and go and the fuel economy improved slightly (from just under 26 mpg total average improved to slightly over 27mpg total average). I drive a pretty even mix of city and highway.

Fuel economy aside, it just drives better on the Shell 91.

I drive about 28-30k miles a year right now. I've been putting 87 octane in my car for the last 20k miles. I've had no issues with knocking, and my fuel economy is about 32-35 mpg hwy, and about 28 mpg overall.

I save 22-40 cents per gallon. (Premium swing sucks in Chicago).

I drive a nice car...and an expensive one. If it runs on 87 just fine, as far as I can tell.. then I don't feel the need to spend extra money on higher octane. I'm just losing money.

And anyone that makes the "well if you cant afford the expensive gas, dont get the expensive car" argument... No! That's just dumb. You buy nice things because they offer benefits like comfort, and longevity. Expensive things shouldn't be money pits.

It will run on 87, but it will not run best. Try the premium for a while so you have a comparison atleast.

The owners manual recommends premium for a reason. Not just to empty your pockets.
