I read this on Audi site.... http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/to...anced_key.html

With advanced key, the electronic access and authorisation system which is available as an option, the driver can keep the car key in his or her pocket when unlocking and starting the vehicle. The key is identified via a proximity sensor in the car door and a radio pulse generator in the key housing as soon as the driver is within approximately 1.50 metres of the vehicle. The vehicle is automatically unlocked as soon as the door handle (or boot lid) is actuated.

The advanced key system also means that, before the start of a journey, the steering is released and the ignition turned on electronically and without inserting the key in the ignition. Provided the driver has the key on his or her person inside the car, the engine can be started by pressing the starter button. The advanced key can also be used like a conventional key to operate the central locking and to start the vehicle via the ignition lock. When leaving a vehicle equipped with advanced key, it merely suffices to press the small locking button on the driver's door handle in order to lock the vehicle. By recognising up to four drivers, advanced key forms the basis of the new personalisation system, one-touch memory.

Does the advanced key have a rechargable battery charged by the ignition slot, like in BMWs, or do you have to change the battery once in a while?

It has a non-rechargeable battery. You need Prestige package to get the advanced key. (Prestige comes with Nav for 2010, doesn't it?)

You wouldn't normally put the key into a slot, so, no, there is no recharge function -- the batteries do wear out. I went through 2 in 42 months -- meaning I had to have the battery replaced once at about 18 months and again at 36 months.

Here's the 101.

-The key must be in the car for it to start.
-You can take the key out of the car once it's started. The car will signal the key is not in the car anymore.
-To open the door, you need to touch the doorhandle. Not even the button, but make physical contact with the handle at any place. (IE by the time you pull the handle the door should be unlocked.)
-I pretty much never take the key out of my pocket.
-You can program the mem seats to move depending on what key you use.

It should be pointed out that the key that goes in your pocket is the same for all cars. Only the cars equipped with the start button have the onboard electronics to enable the "keyless" function.

With respect to the battery in the key, Philips has thought this through. Valaeo is the maker of the key system, but Philips is the Dutch electronics giant that does the inner bits. If the battery dies, you still have a metal key and lock cylinder to open the car. Once inside you can put the key into the dash with a dead battery. The dash has a transformer primary that inductively couples the current into the key. This allows the security chip in the key chat with the car to allow it to start. Take the battery out and try it at home.

The only time you actually draw current from the battery is when you push a button. If you linger on the button, the battery will expire sooner. If you tap it, the battery will be longer in the tooth before replacement. At work I found out that the buttons were being pushed all day long inside my pocket. I came out of the office and my trunk was open! I solved the problem by putting a hook up in my suite to hold the key while I am at work. This makes it easier for the valet to come get my car for gas and washing.
