Default Crack in windshield

Today I noticed a small crack in my windshield. It is smaller than a dime in diameter and only looks like the surface of the glass is cracked. Sort of looks like bulletproof glass when it gets shot by a bullet, but on a much smaller scale. Guessing a small rock hit it.

Can this be repaired and what does it generally cost? And will it get worse if I don't repair it?

Call your insurance, most will cover it at no cost to you. I got one as well, and USAA actually has a phone number just for windshield cracks. I called, then they sent me to Safelite to get it fixed. They gave me the option to have their mobile unit come out and fix it or for me to make an appointment to go in to their shop and have it done there. I went in to the shop, they fixed it, and I was not billed.

The insurance pays for it because it's a lot cheaper for them to get it fixed now, than to replace an entire windshield if it spreads. The safelite did a good job I guess, it will prevent it from spreading. I can still see the crack (it's like a star, radiating out from the point of impact), so it's not guaranteed to be perfect cosmetically again. It's for structural integrity to prevent it from spreading again.

Anyways, give your insurance a call and see if they'll fix it and check to see if you have to pay anything. I'd get it checked out as soon as possible (I think USAA's windshield crack phone line is even 24/7/365).

I agree with bunn, get it fixed asap. I got a chip in my windshield last year and had it fixed the next day. With the extreme hot/cold weather conditions here in Quebec (Canada) you don't want to take a chance of it spreading, and it does quickly if not looked after.

Also, free here in Canada for the same reason mentioned in bunn's thread.

Good Luck

I recently had a stone crack in my 2009 A4 windshield, the $38 resin-suction patch held until the cold weather, then the main crack started to extend. Metlife contracts with Safelite for replacement service, who offered to replace at one of their centers, or have someone come to my car; after a question or two, they happily arranged to have a factory Audi windshield installed at my local dealership. All of this was covered under my insurance, and the dealership installation was the same reported cost to insurance as Safelite. Overall a totally painless process for me. Many thanks to each company along the way!

If you get a crack in windshield, it is important to put a piece of (transparent) tape over the crack as soon as possible. This is to avoid dirt get inside the glass, which may cause troubles with repair.
