Default Transmission sounds different when in reverse.

My car has around 1500 miles on it. Since I have had it, I have noticed that when I place the car in R to back out of the garage the engine sound is significantly different then when the car is in P and idling or in D when driving. I didn't think much of it until my wife even noticed it today while she was outside of the car waiting for me to back out. Has anyone else noticed a different engine sound while in reverse?

It is NOT the engine -- it is the transmission.

I am curious how you got the engine to run in reverse?

The noise is from the transmission.

Okay, Has anyone noticed a different Transmission sound when their car is placed in R, even before the car starts to move in reverse?
The sound is a deeper tone or pitch, not a grinding or clicking.

I dropped it off at Audi Service yesterday so that they could cold start the car this morning. They have informed me this morning, that the sound I am hearing is the turbo at start up and there is no correlation to putting the transmission in reverse. It just happens that I am starting the car and immediately backing out of the garage.

That response satisfies you? Just asking.

Next time you park, back into your garage. I bet you will hear the same sound when you drive out. The engine sounds significantly different when you cold start the car; it doesn't matter if you drive forward or in reverse.

No, the response did not 100% satisfy me.
dk1, that is exactly what I am going to try next. I am also going to let the car warm up a little bit longer.

On the morning I took the car in, I started the car and it sounded like a low growl as I backed out of the garage. I had left something in the garage, so I put the car in park and left it idling in the driveway as I went back to the garage. Once I went back to the car and backed out of my driveway it sounded fine.

Yep, that looks like normal operation. If you watch tachometer you will see RPMs drop at the same instant as the sound changes from growl to quiet. This happens only when the car has been parked for an extended period of time, like overnight.

BTW, my neighbor asked me if the car had a diesel engine when he heard it started cold.
