If your car does not have Nav, it does not have MMI...
Audi has the AMI (Audi Music Interface) which is available as an option.

That is the stock symphony radio of a B8 A4 - which happens to be extremely similar to the Audi MMI, however it still isn't a MMI.

Generally the real MMI differs in that:
The controls are located under the shift selector - and the "brain" of the system is located in a rack on the side of the trunk. This is then connected to the interior of the car with fiber optic cables...

They look the same to the user, but the way they work is very different. Audi kept their front ends similar to each other to keep things uniform between models...

This is all very confusing - this articles helps to clarify the differences:

no thats not mmi, its ami, look in your glove box and see if you have music interface, or look in the center console for the aux jack.
you might be better off just getting a memory card.

Thanks ! Aux jack is in the driver hand rest compartment. I want to be able to control the iPod/iPhone on the ami, view playlists and make selections. Dealer said they have to take away the ami and put another which costs more than $2K.

actually it is not AMI either - it is the stock symphony radio...
AMI is: Audi Music Interface that, when equipped, is located in you glove box and is used to interface your ipod/iphone with the radio...

This will work with MMI only (2nd or 3rd generation), not standard radio per their description. Sounds like you have neither from what you describe. I believe the bottom line is, if you have an AMI jack in your glovebox, you can get ipod/iPhone control on your screen. If not, you will only get analog music out of the device through the audio system via the aux in jack in the console. You would hook a mini jack cable from your iPod headphone jack to the car's mini jack aux in and control music from the iPod itself.
