Default Oil Usages of 2009 2010 A4

I have seen many posts of people complaining about engine oil usage on their 2007 A4 2.0T.

Would 2009 and 2010 owners mind to share your experience with this topic? Are you experincing the same thing?

I'm picking up my new A4 this weekend and it is my first Audi. I have been doing research on Edmunds.com before I decided to get an Audi. It was given 9.2 out of 10 consumer rating and 8.5 model ratings on 2009 model at Edmunds.com

But I'm a little concerned about the reliablility of Audi after reading those posts in other web forums. Per some people's comment adding 1 Qt of oil every 1200 miles is normal.

So I was wondering whether this is still hold true for the 2009 and 2010 models.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Default Neither of my A4's have burned much oil

I burned only about a half quart of oil before the first oil change on my '09. I didn't have to add any oil in the first 5000 miles. They were mostly highway miles which might have made a difference.

My '98 A4 with over 190,000 miles on it only goes through about one quart of oil every 5000 miles. Maybe I'm just lucky, but based on my experience I'd say that there is nothing to worry about.

How many miles at first oil change? Also, do you let the turbo to cool before shut the car off? Someone on other board mentioned that people should let their turbo cool down a little before shut it down after each drive.

I used to have a sport car with a turbo and I let the car idle for couple minutes before I shut it off. I'm not sure this is something related to the excessive oil consumption.

My wife's friend told her that Audi cars require very high maintenance. I am not sure what exactly does that mean. I have been driven Japanese all my life and I do oil changes myself. I'm assuming I could do the same to an Audi unless it voids warranty. Otherwise, I don't understand what exactly mean of high maintenance.

Judging by the monitor my car consumes a bit less than half a quart every 5K miles. It was the case for 5K service; right now I am at 10K miles and the monitor inicator is just above half.

Manual states that consumption of half a quart per 600 miles is normal. Most people report a lot less than that.

Idling the turbo before shut off is not required for B8 model.

I don't know what very high mainenance means. Rather than relying on what somebody said just check what manufacturer requires. Information for all models is available on the web. 5K service is free, others can be covered by an Audi Care plan which is about $800 but some negotiate it free with purchase.

Thanks for your comment and the link. I'm sure I will read the manual carefully when I have it. So there is no oil dipstick you can actually manually check oil quality and quantity, uh?

What if the computerized oil monitor fails on you? Can we really trust it at 100% of time for the next 10 yrs? Audi is recommending an oil change at 5k, then 20k after first oil change. That's really a long time before an oil change providing that a 4 cylinders with a turbo, the oil gets dark quickly.

My 2007 hond civic si needs an oil change every 6k miles and I normally do it every 3k because the oil was so dark after 3k miles. So I would assuming the same case for Audio unless audi uses a totally different type of motor oil.

Thanks for your input and the link. I will definitely read the owner's mannual carefully once I have it. It's amazing that the new audi oweners have to soley rely on the computer to monitor the oil level and I'm assuming the oil level monitoring senor would never fail. Otherwise, it would have a disastrous consequence. Also the oil condition would affected by the way people drive their car. The oil turns bad/dark quickly if the turbo has been constantly used, hence it would require an oil change ahead of scheduled service. That's why people check their oil level/quality using a dipstick. I'm not sure how can we do that for the new Audi.

Maybe Audi wants us bring the car back for service very often, so they can make a huge profit from it. Hence, the cost for maintaining this car would be very high like what other people said.

Anyway I'm not here to criticise Audi. It's a beautiful and there is no doubt about it. That's why I bought it. But I started seeing some true facts of this car in terms of the way audi design their cars and why are they doing that way.

BTW, how much is to bring the car to dealer for service (oil change) after the first 5k miles?

I have a 2009 Audi A4 2.0T Premium Plus. At first things were fine and I had the regularly scheduled maintenance at 5k miles. However, since that appt. I've taken it to the dealer 4 times as it goes through a quart of oil every 250-300 miles. They've done numerous tests, replaced the sensor, etc. Nothing has worked. It's gotten to the point where yesterday I put a quart in as it flashed yellow (low fuel) and drove home. Today I'm driving to work and the light comes back on. Ridiculous. Don't have time to deal with this crap and I'm ready to lose it.

Could it be oil leak somewhere? There is no dipstick to mannually check for oil level? It sounds like the oil level monitor isn't working properly.
