Default Plastic cover for trunk hinge broke today..WTF?

One of the grey plastic covers for the trunk hinges on my B8 broke today, the little plastic clips that hold it onto the metal snapped off for some bizarre reason we can't still figure out. It's especially embarassing because my wife gave me a hard time of how cheap the part was on a $40k car and the mechanism for holding it was just 4 clips with really flimsy plastic.

In the end, I put it on with some packging tape and it works perfectly but it looks like crap. The part # was listed on the inside but I forgot to write it down. I'm just going to wait until my 5k service and have the local dealer replace it for me.

I really hope stuff doesn't start breaking/falling off later on...it hasn't even been a year and I'm only at 4k miles.

The part # is 8K5971821. Can't anywhere that sells it though. Looks like I'll have to wait until 5k service and have the dealer order it. This better be covered under warranty.

Of course it is covered by warranty. You need to add 01c to the part number to get it in black. It sells for about 3 to 5 bucks.

Thanks you have any place that sells them? I tried 8k597182101c and it didn't return anything on www.genuineaudiparts.com.

I might just buy it myself and install since it's so cheap and easy but can't find a place that sells it.

That website is just another door into Miramar Audi in San Diego. The catalog does not have 2009 models listed.

The cover can be ordered by any dealer, and if it is stock at the parts depot, they usually get it in a day or so.

I'd just let the dealer know it is defective when you go for service. Audi should pick up the tab.

That's the second report of this failure. I believe the first poster stated that it broke when he was closing a a very full trunk. Did yours just spontaneously break off? I have to be honest... since the first report of this issue, I stare at those pieces daily as I'm putting my computer bag in/out of the trunk, and just can't fathom how they broke on there own! I'll admit, I've thought "what was that guy doing to break those things, I jut don't get it..." but now hearing another person has the issue, I'm worried. :-/

Actually yes it was a very full trunk but there was no obstruction or object near the hinge where this piece is. The little plastic clips that hold the piece in place just snapped out and then broke. I have it on there with tape right now and my dealer is telling me they would have to take photos and all this nonense to fix it. I don't want to make a trip to the dealer to show them this, then another trip to go get the part installed.

It takes literally 5 seconds to install. I think I'm just going to order it myself for $10 (what I was quoted) and suck it up this one time. Next time it happens though I'm taking it in.

Default I didn't have that break, but the seat back on my driver's seat

came apart. My brother had that come apart on his 02 B6 sedan, I had an 04 that never had that issue... Not nice to have a week old car and have the seat back blow out. This is a sport seat on a 09 PP. I weigh 185 lbs so I am not that heavy.... ML

The updated part number is 8K5971821A01C. Genuineaudiparts.com added it to their catalog so you can order it from them but they charge $7.50 for shipping so it would have been about $15 total.
My local dealer is selling it for $13, so I went with my dealer. I know this is bad and Audi should pick up the tab but the dealer isn't close and I don't want to waste my time going there to show them the part, then they order it and then they schedule time to install it for what will take me 5 mins. They confirmed I can't install it myself if I want it covered under warranty. Idiots.

This way at least, once the part comes in, I'll go get it, install it and no one will be the wiser...it'll also save me a ton of time. Paying $13 sucks but in this case, it's totally worth it for avoiding the hassle.

not sure if I posted this before but mine was the one that broke a long time ago trying to close a full trunk, dealer replaced, and just last week it broke again with the "full trunk" even though nothing was obstructing it...I'm just going to rip the other one off and call it a day - I don't think they serve a functional purpose trunk works fine without
